Europe implements important Big Tech legislation, United States must follow suit
European Union’s landmark Digital Services Act has now spelt out the responsibilities expected from Big Tech companies in a bid to make social media safer. In this recent op-ed for The Hill, Real Facebook Oversight Board member and Stanford Cyber Policy Center’s International Policy Director, Marietje Schaake, explains why this legislation is important and how the United States can also implement similar legislation to reduce harmful and hateful content on social media.
“This milestone should send a signal of hope across the Atlantic, that we can implement real oversight and regulation with teeth. For the U.S., where legislation and regulation have languished, it should offer both a blueprint and encouragement on how to move forward. Cooperation between the EU and U.S. would go a long way in setting better, democratic, global standards.”Marietje Schaake in The Hill
